One in three young people access Facebook every day on holiday
PRQuick.comA new study by the UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent has revealed that 32% of young people who have holidayed abroad in the past year accessed their Facebook account every day during their trip.
New research by one of the UK’s leading independent online travel agencies has brought to light the extent of social network addiction amongst young people today, with 32% claiming to have accessed Facebook every day whilst they were on their trip abroad.
Online travel agency http://www.sunshine.co.uk polled 1,162 young people aged 16-25, each of whom had a Facebook account, and had been on holiday abroad in the last year. When asked, ‘Did you access your Facebook account at all during your holiday?’ just one in ten, 11%, stated “no”. Of the respondents who did access Facebook, 32% admitted that they did so every day.
When asked by sunshine.co.uk, ‘What did you predominately use Facebook for during your holiday?’ 62% said it was to keep in touch with friends and family back home, whilst 26% stated it was so they could upload pictures of their holiday for everyone to see.
Of the respondents who accessed Facebook during their holiday, 38% used their mobile phone to do so, whilst 51% made use of computers in internet cafes or the accommodation they were staying in.
Furthermore, of those who didn’t access Facebook during their holiday, 43% explained that it was because they physically weren’t able to. Of these, 69% said they would have liked to.
When looking further in to the use of technology in general during holidays, sunshine.co.uk also found that the majority, 89%, of the young people polled used their mobile phone on holiday; with 74% of these claiming to text every day.
Chris Brown, co-founder of http://www.sunshine.co.uk, commented;
“For people who go on Facebook every day, I can see why they’d find it hard to go without it during their holiday. However, holidays are supposed to be about having fun, relaxing and, more importantly, doing things you couldn’t normally do at home. With that in mind, I think it’s a better idea to leave social networks alone until you get home.
“Facebook is a good way to keep in touch with people back home, but holidays are about getting away from it all. When you’re away, switch your phone off, leave social networks behind and just relax; there’s plenty of time for technology when you get home! People need to be aware that roaming charges can be very costly, so it’s always worth checking it out before going away.”
