New research from the UK’s leading discount website has revealed that the average Brit consumes around 4,000 calories on Christmas Day alone; double the daily recommended allowance.

It seems that Christmas really does live up to its reputation as the season for over-indulgence; as a new study from www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, the UK’s leading discount website, has revealed that the average Briton consumes more than 4,000 calories on Christmas Day alone.

Conducted in order to gauge the eating habits of Britons over the Christmas period, MyVoucherCodes.co.uk polled 1,832 men and women aged 18 and over; asking them to reveal what foods they regularly ate on Christmas Day itself.

The average Christmas dinner for Britons, according to the research, accumulates to a 1,000 calorie average; consisting of:

  • 3.8 slices of meat (Turkey/ Ham/ Game)
  • 4.4 roast potatoes
  • 0.8 tablespoons of stuffing
  • 2.7 brussel sprouts
  • 1.2 small yorkshire puddings
  • 51ml gravy
  • 2.3 chipolata sausages
  • 2.1 parsnips
  • 2.5 tablespoons Christmas pudding
  • 1.2 tablespoons double cream

Furthermore, the majority of those taking part in the study admitted to having second helpings of Christmas dinner, of half as much of their initial portion again; adding an average of 500 calories.

The average Brit also admitted to consuming 10.3 variety box chocolates on Christmas Day, 3.1 handfuls of crisps, 6.2 biscuits and 3.8 glasses of wine. The majority also admitted to eating a ‘leftover meat sandwich’ on Christmas night, along with 2.6 mince pies and 0.9 slices of Christmas cake. These snacks and drinks alone add 2,000 calories to the average Christmas Day food consumption.

Further to this, the majority of those who took part in the study admitted to eating a cooked breakfast on Christmas morning; with the average breakfast consisting of 2.1 slices of bread, 2.8 rashers of bacon, 1.7 eggs and 1.2 glasses of fruit juice. This totals in a 500 calorie breakfast alone.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“Given Christmas’ reputation as the season for overindulgence, we wanted to look into the truth that lies behind this. We found that the average Brit consumes almost double the daily recommended allowance of calories on Christmas Day alone; hardly surprising given the amount of additional snacks consumed outside of main meals on the day.

He continued:

“Although it’s perfectly acceptable to treat yourself over Christmas, be careful when it comes to over-indulgence. Too much alcohol and sweet treats can cause a festive over-hang that takes more than a few days to get rid of!”
