How Long Does It Take to Build Muscle
For most young people (that’s anyone still in their thirties or younger) one of the most important questions seems to be, “How long does it take to build muscle?” Realistically, there is NO “one way” to address this. Here, we’ll examine some methods for gaining lean muscle mass, and what this specifically entails for different people.
To answer “How long does it take to build muscle,” first let’s look at age.
Some teens really want to jump right into a “bodybuilding” routine. This is NOT recommended, since in early adolescences the human body is simply NOT fully developed enough to handle the intense physical demand that weightlifting puts on it. You should be no younger than sixteen to start a muscle-building regimen. The REAL gains, however, don’t even begin, for a young man, until he reaches ages eighteen to twenty-one. Are there exception to the “rule?” Of course! Although some “kids” can pack on some solid muscle mass, great care MUST be taken to ensure overall safety and health. One such youth who is rather “buff” is Taylor Lautner (Twilight: New Moon).
Another factor is your current amount of muscle mass.
We all have a predetermined weight that we can reach. Some folks muscle mass is just naturally higher than others. It is actually harder to gain MORE muscle mass if you are already near your predetermined limit. The “plateau,” in this case, may be difficult for some to overcome, especially if continuing the same exercise program (even if it has been effective until now). Basically, the first fifteen pounds of lean muscle are much easier, and much quicker to achieve than the next fifteen. For steroid user, there are a completely different set of concepts. However, with steroid use, and it’s rapid muscle gains, comes it’s share of downfalls!
Another factor in building muscle is the effort and time you commit to your training.
Your own PERSONAL answer to “How long does it take to build muscle” is largely dependent on the time you spend each week on building muscle. We’ve all witnessed our favorite Hollywood celebrities get totally “buff” for a particular film project. The reality of it is, they have spent the MAJORITY of their WHOLE WEEK doing some INTENSE workouts! It’s actually quite often that these celebs will devote EVERYDAY of the week to training before a movie role. Obviously, the “Average Joe” like you and I can’t just up-and-quit our jobs to workout 24/7! Please keep in mind that, although gaining some lean muscle mass is a VERY NICE objective to have, let’s not get obsessive!
So how long does it take to build muscle in a PRACTICAL period of time?
A very realistic goal is that you can expect to safely, naturally, and healthily put on fifteen to twenty pounds of good muscle definition in your initial two years – providing, of course, that you are seventeen years old or more. Muscle growth comes much slower after that – at a rate of about two to three pounds a year. These are, of course, estimations for the “general public.” Keep in mind that other variables, like genetics, can alter your results. How long does it take to build muscle? As you can see, it’s not the same for everybody. But by understanding these factors, you are MUCH BETTER PREPARED to gain some solid muscle!
